Ghost vs. Court

  • Jan. 7th, 2010 at 10:12 PM
I'm not really experienced in shorter stories(and by short, I mean under 75k) but this one kind of sprang into existence on its own due to some "what-ifs" I had about my base universe. So. Same universe, different section. Lions and tigers and spin-offs, oh my!

I don't think it's finalized, but I'd really like comments on the plot so far. Tell me your first impression(s) and tell me if you'd want more after this?

Working Title: Ghost vs. Court
Genre: Fantasy
Warnings: If you don't like suspension of disbelief or odd-for-the-sake-of-it, this probably isn't for you.
General Idea: The Tempus Curia has opened the case of a female ghost on the charges of mutiny from her cosmic cruiser, murder of the captain, and willfully corrupting the timeline, fleeing the scene of the crime by way of outlawed, dimensional hole-punching technology.

'This court is now called to order.' )

Poem: Hair Dye

  • Jan. 7th, 2010 at 10:12 PM

I haven't really written anything in ages, especially poetry (I really struggle with this area of writing) so I'd ADORE some honest feedback on this short poem, please! If it needs to go behind a cut, tell me and I shall rectify this outrage.

Hair Dye

Today
I decided
That I had had enough
Dyed my brown hair red
Packed my bags
Left them in the doorway
And walked
To the bus stop.
I waited
And waited.
It began to rain.
Red dye pooled at my feet.
Finally, the bus appeared.
I turned around
And went home.

I write occasionally but I always have a hard time 'sustaining' it because I always get caught up on one detail or something and never move forward. And then I thought that maybe it might work better if I had someone to actually write and work with! Try and get some fresh water in the creative pool.

I am interested in fantasy novels. I am not interested in romantic plotline novels, having a few pairings in the story is okay, but no, you know. Highschool How These Two Kids Got Together, Broke Up, Then Got Together Again stories. I'm good with male / female / young / old / human / nonhuman characters. I am intensely interested in mythological creatures, including things like vampires and shapeshifters. But I base a lot of my thoughts on things like vampires from the original Slavic mythology, which is pretty gross and gory.

I like dark stuff. Not woo woo Goth, I cut my wrists for fun, dark. But interestingly morbid / intense storylines and characters. I'm okay with a lot of graphic situations, I just don't really like smooshy romance.

I'm okay with first and third person perspective, but I'm really picky about first person.

... I think that covers everything! For samples of my writing, I did NaNoWriMo several years ago and I did a series of short stories. http://thirtywords.insanejournal.com/ There they all are. Warning, they're not all edited so it's pretty raw stuff in there. But here's one of my favorites incase you don't want to follow links.

Like the great Doctor Who before me, I decided to do a Nadya's Nights holiday special. Originally, I intended for it to go from December 26th to December 31st with a chapter posted each day and climaxing on New Year's Eve cuz, hey... that'd be pretty rad. Instead, I'm just finishing it tonight. It's gotta few more parts to it than I intended, but that's not a bad thing cuz I think, in the grand scheme of things, it came out pretty awesome.

Anyway, check it out and lemme know what you think.

Hi all!  I'm a new user to livejournal, and basically I got this so I could share some of my writing out there and hopefully get some suggestions/criticisms/comments back :)  I'm open to anything you have to say.  So, here's the prologue for the young adult novel I've been working on that I"m trying to get published...let me know what you think!

Title: Innocence (Prologue)

Rating: PG-12/R (cussing is pretty much the only thing bad in here, some violence, but not really)

Plot Key Points: Basic spy novel with a twist--main characters are Alex Weston and Brian Walker, as well as Chandler Poole and Brandon Nabors

Enjoy! :)

Prologue

Brian Walker crouched on the rooftop of one of the tallest skyscrapers in all of Japan, directly across from the Japanese Embassy. He took off the standard black backpack all CIA operatives carried and took out the three pieces that would assemble his AK-47.

Brian Walker wasn’t a normal seventeen year old.

With swift and experienced fingers, Brian locked the three sections into place, reaching into his backpack for his ammunition; finally, he locked his round into the gun and toggled the safety switch off. Brian rolled his shoulders and sighed before reaching into the bag one last time to remove a small earpiece and a large wrapped bundle of cloth.

Brian put on the small earpiece and immediately his ear was filled with the sounds of his co-operative on the mission, and best friend, Chandler Poole.

“God this is so boring…why is it that we always get stuck with the boring missions?”

Show Me Who I AM

I've missed you my dear
my love
your razor fingers trailing
down me
my love
my dear
I've missed you
my blackbird
your piercing eyes
on me
my dear
my demon
Oh how i've missed you
judge me lover
polishing your black halo
my darling
smelling my skin like an animal
in heat
do you hunger my love
I hunger for you
for your hated
hand on my throat
my hunter
bring me down with steely arrows
in my back
my heart
fill my lungs with blood
descend on me
smiling
my love
my demon
never let me be and i will
always be yours
my hunter
lover
darling
love me my demon
as I have loved you
bring me down
blackbird
bring me down

This was originally going to be a copy/paste of the standard add, but there were some issues and html is not my forte. *grins* So, I'm advertising a new community for writing; it's a big bang for original fiction. There's more information here.

Hi. I'm Bianca, twenty years of age-- a lurker for a year or more. I decided I wanted to be a writer at the very young age, and stuck with it until college when reality struck. It takes a great amount of dedication and determination to be a writer, and it takes a lot more than that to get published. It takes even more to make money from it. So I let it fall by the wayside for a while but recently decided that, damn it, writing it what I want to do! It makes me happy. Sadly, however, I could think of nothing to write. Then I turned to prompts on the internet and was pleased with what I came up with. I do hope prompts are allowed.

All comments are appreciated. Please be critical (or encouraging) and don't hold back.
Now off to read and comment on some of the amazing stories in this community! =]

Title: Tequila Shots and Comic Books
Rating: PG13
Prompt: Weave a mini-story using the following words, in order: shell, comic book, discarded soap box, rubber soles, postcard.
Summary: The girl and the geek. The fast and the unexpected. The tequila shot and the comic books.

The Trouble With Actual Organs

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 8:58 PM
Link to Cover Art
Length: currently about 5200 words
Rating: T or PG-13 for violence and some language
Genre(s): Scifi/fantasy, crime, attempt at cyberpunk

Summary:
Ellysia Emery dies – but she can't remember what happened to her. All she can tell is that she seems to be losing her affect, her ability to feel and express emotion. She begins to have strange, supernatural experiences, including hearing electronic voice phenomena. One spirit contacts her, and beseeches Elle to catch the man who murdered her and six other women who are caught in limbo with her, so that their souls can move on. Ellysia takes up this mission while trying to figure out what it is that's taken all her emotions. The killer might be the key to it all, but she has to find him first.

I could use input not only on the story but on the summary, too. Does my summary take too much mystery away from the plot? Any suggestions on how to summarize without spoiling stuff? Does my summary make my story sound interesting?

As for the story... anything goes, really. I'm more interested in constructive criticism and improvement suggestions than simply whether you like it or not, though that would be nice too.

Preditors & Editors Poll

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 2:13 PM
Hi:

I'm coming out from lurking to promote a favorite author who's been nominated for the Preditors & Editors Poll in two categories.

Patricia Morrison (who's written as Patricia Kennealy and Patricia Kennealy-Morrison) has been nominated in the Mystery Novel category for her latest book, California Screamin', and also in the Author Category. I'm drumming up interest and promoting votes for her.

If the name is familiar, Patricia is the author of The Keltiad series--The Copper Crown, The Throne of Scone, The Silver Branch, etc (all published through Harper Collins and Roc). And she also penned an autobiography, Strange Days: My Life with and without Jim Morrison through Plume. Patricia is now self-publishing through Lizard Queen Press, writing her Rennie Stride, The Rock and Roll Murders series, which are absolutely great.

To vote for her book: http://www.critters.org/predpoll/novelmys.shtml

Thanks...and back to lurking. :-)

How to Save a Life

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 1:57 PM
Hi guys, I've been writing a collection of short-stories based around mental illness in children, and I'd really appreciate some feedback on the formats, and how I've tried to belnd the comedy into the tragedy. So here's a little piece for your amusement.

Title: How to Save a Life
Summary: Arabella has seen enough Jeremy Kyle to know about the issues surrounding suicide and depression. So what will she do when she gets a call from a 17-year-old standing on a bridge, ready to jump?
Rating: T

Darling, you have so much to live for! x

 Really? x

Yes. Am in cinema, speak later x

Arabella had worked as a consultant on the suicide hotline since the Woolworths in Bath had closed. As she said at the interview, she had no personal experience of suicide, but she watched a lot of shows that dealt with the issues surrounding it, such as Jeremy Kyle, and felt that she had a lot of accumulated wisdom to offer the community.

“Hello, you’ve reached the NHS suicide hotline thank you for waiting, your call is important to us and may be monitored for training purposes.”

     “Hello?”

Arabella paused with her diet coke half-way to her lips. “Hello,” she repeated.

     “H-h-h-hello?”

The short story competition I wrote this for called for 750 words or less. You can write a story in that length (you can write one in a single sentence with enough skill), but whether I managed to do it well ...

His days seemed mostly made up of smoking, drinking black coffee, and cutting obituaries out of the local paper, which he then taped to the walls. )
